Hybrid Integrated Components For Optical Display Systems

Awarded: NOK 8.0 mill.

NCE microsystem/HVE (HVE) has identified optoelectronic components as one main focus area. HVE has also signed strategic research and development contracts with industry in this area. As a part of this cooperation HVE want to establish a project related to hynrid integration of optical microsystems. The project partners have identified a number of industrial users of the knowledge established during the project and these will be directly involved in both financing and practical work relevant to the proje ct. The project will work on an optical systems applications in order to give increased relevance to industry. Laser as a light source in projection is a coming technology and is a prefered technology due to low energy consumption, low price (in the futur e), good image quality, long lifetime and small size. In order to achieve wide acceptance of lasers in these markets one needs to overcome the speckle contrast effect, which is an image degrading interference phenomena inherent to the use of highly cohere nt laser light with a diffuse image screen. Current state of the art solutions apply moving parts and insufficient performance. Degree of speckle reduction, reduction of physical space demand, reduction of light loss and image degradation (e.g. defocus an d blurring effects), are all factors that need improvement. The project will demonstrate a simple, miniatyrized device for speckle reduction. The project will also result in valuable expertise in thin film based micro-actuator technologies like e.g. PZT a nd CMUT, which would be applicable in many of the central focus research areas of both HVE and NTNU. Speckle phenomenons are central in many optical application fields ranging from e.g. measurement systems to imaging, and it is a field which has significa nt cross implications with established focus areas at NTNU. The main partners will be HVE, NTNU, Projection Design, Cyviz, Ignis Display and OptoNor. A number of international partners will also be involved.
