Biopolymer Engineering

Awarded: NOK 24.6 mill.

The project is based on a multidisciplinary research platform with extensive industry co-operation to perform research on marine biopolymers and their microbially produced analogues, providing novel biomaterials, initially designed for drug delivery syste ms, tissue engineering, nutraceuticals and cosmetics. The research will be based on a common multi¬disciplinary strategy (biopolymer engineering) comprising genetics and systems biology, polysaccharide chemistry, physics, immunology and fermentation tech nology to develop novel, advanced biomaterials with engineered properties relevant for the industry partners, as well as analytical tools and novel understanding of the synthesis and the basic biological properties of polysaccharides. The project will co ncentrate its R&D on marine biopolymers from raw materials of strategic importance for Norway. These have a particularly high commercial potential as advanced biomaterials for the associated industry consortium.
