The Biohealth 2 proposal is based on CONOR (Cohort of Norway) and MoBa (the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study), which together formed BioHealth 1 (Biobanks for Health in Norway). BioHealth I was funded by FUGE I and has five partners: the universiti es in Tromsø (UiT), Bergen (UiB) and Oslo (UiO), the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), and the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (NIPH). BioHealth I is a collaboration between two existing cohorts with health data, clinical measure ments and biological samples from about 200 000 adults (CONOR) and about 270 000 mothers, fathers and children who participate in MoBa. By mid 2008, BioHealth will have funded DNA-extraction from about 400 000 samples from these cohorts. In addition, BioH ealth has supported the establishment of two national biobanks (in Levanger/CONOR and Oslo/MoBa), developed biostatistical methods for genetic analyses (HAPLIN), participated in a number of international initiatives and projects (EU FP6/FP7, NIH etc), con tributed to improvement of Norwegian legislation on health registries, biobanks and medical research, and initiated a project on commercialisation and product ideas based on biobanking. In January 2007, the five partners agreed to develop a broader long t erm consortium called COBANOR in which all population based cohorts at these institutions are invited to participate. COBANOR will be developed on the basis of BioHealth, but will also seek funding for projects from other sources, and develop further coll aborations with disease biobanks. BioHealth 2 will take actively part in the establishment of COBANOR, develop efficient services and management systems for access to data and samples, and focus on strategic activities to increase and use Norway's interna tional advantage in medical research based on cohorts, biobanks and registries. Location of the selected national core activities is based on ongoing activities and competence at each partner institution.
