Sophus Lie Seminar at the University of Tromsø - 2008

Awarded: NOK 0.15 mill.

It is a real problem that one experiences isolation performing research at the University of Tromsø. To intensify our investigations we created the scientific-research seminar "Sophus Lie" (named after the great Norwegian mathematician, whose ideas we app ly and develop until nowadays). This is the only functioning research seminar at our Department and we united most active researches to periodic exposition and discussion of the most important achievements in our areas of investigations. These include: th e geometric theory of differential equations, quantization problems, noncommutative geometry and related subjects from analysis, applied mathematics, differential geometry and mathematical physics, dynamical systems and statistical physics. To intensify o ur research we need periodical scientific contacts with experts in various fields of mathematics. The funds of the Department allow our travels to the conferences, but it is not sufficient to let invite people regularly. To drive on research, in addition to our internal forces, we also established good scientific contacts. But to develop them further and to establish new we need a financial support. Thus we apply for 150.000 for 3 years. This would allow us to invite from 3 to 5 scientists yearly, which i s really necessary in such a distant place as Tromsø. In addition to research support this external input would give a perspective to young scientists who are limited in selection of possibilities for their future carrier. All in all, this will raise the scientific level of the Mathematical Department of Tromsø University.
