Knowledge Base and Tools for Development and Management of a Sustainable Infrastructure.

Awarded: NOK 6.7 mill.

Over the last decades, sustainable development and sustainability have become crucial issues globally. Through various types of international cooperation, it has been pointed out that the activities within the building and construction sector play a key r ole in the development of a sustainable society. It will therefore be most important to be able to design, construct and manage buildings and infrastructure in a way to promote sustainable development. This project is part of a research area Sustainable I nfrastructure at the Faculty of Engineering Science and Technology, NTNU. In that research area, infrastructure is defined as buildings, structures, networks for communication and transport, plants and networks for water supply and wastewater treatment, p lants for solid waste treatment and energy production, and networks for energy distribution. In Norway, main parts of this infrastructure are estimated to have replacement costs of almost NOK 5000 billion. In order to promote and contribute to the design , construction and management of a more sustainable infrastructure, some key areas for long term research activities have been defined. In this project, three basic and generic topics have been selected for research: * state of the art description of the knowledge base and key areas regarding sustainable infrastructure, as a basis for future research activities * development, evaluation and verification of specific indicators for measurement of the extent of sustainability of the infrastructure * establis hment of LCA and LCC as tools for development and management of a sustainable infrastructure The project will comprise PhD and postdoc scholarships, and it will be carried out in cooperation between actual departments at NTNU, public authorities and indu stry companies, and other research institutes and universities in Norway and abroad.
