Interoperable Object-Oriented Model for Infrastructure Management

Awarded: NOK 12.0 mill.

A critical challenge of today's societies is the management of infrastructures and their environment. The need of proper tools is especially acute in the urban areas, in which many layers of information and many disciplines converge in fast-changing condi tions. The primary objective for this project is to define and develop a generic, interoperable, distributable object model and software platform well suited for infrastructure and urban area modeling, planning, construction and maintenance, and 3D-enab led tools that can present, interact and modify the object model. The technical challenge is to add to existing infrastructure databases the ability to represent "intelligent" objects, which take care of their changes in time and their relation to other objects (for instance, checking possible conflicts) and design constraints (for instance, power line poles checking automatically their separation to comply with physical and legal restrictions). This data model should be distributed across Internet to re mote client applications ranging from 2D and 3D web clients to high-end desktop software, a new generation of intelligence-aware tools for design, presentation, analysis, and 3D display and interaction. The pilot user cases will test how the new tools ca n be used to better organize the different steps of managing infrastructure projects, their constraints and their impact, especially in urban areas. The data model and web services will be released as open source software and proposed for further standard ization to international bodies and is expected to constitute the basis for true interoperability among tools from different vendors and allow the cooperative work from multiple disciplines and actors. Some of the project partners are already marketing to ols, which aim in that direction. The project will generate as results some software prototypes, which are expected to have immediate applicability in new products.
