Innovative Cooling Concepts for Twin Roll Casting of Al

Awarded: NOK 3.0 mill.

Although large efforts are put into alloy and process development during the decades, TRC is almost exclusively produced for commodity products. The reasons are complex but most important are two fundamental questions: i) How to cool the molten aluminium as fast as possible without deteriorating the surface of the rolls? ii) How to control such high cooling rates in the process? Ideally, the material of the shell should have a high strength and a high heat capacitance. These two criteria are, contradicto ry and one must be scarified. However, by improving and redesigning the rolls itself, the desired properties might be achieved. This has not been tried to any degree. The essential innovation in this project is the fact that by developing new cooling c oncepts for TRC with the shell and roll design as the key parameter high quality Al-strips for automotive applications, lithographic sheets, can body stock and thin foils can be produced by TRC. This will represent a step-change for twin roll casting of a luminium and will get broad international attention. This Project is a collaboration of Sintef
