PRINT - PRIority of urbaN commercial Traffic

Awarded: NOK 5.6 mill.

Freight transport is important for the business and life of a city. However, the external conditions for commercial traffic (urban freight transport and service industries transport) are not satisfactory and cause significant costs both for the stakeholde rs and the surrounding society, due to traffic congestion and non-optimal route choices. The overall research challenge for PRINT is expressed as how priority of commercial traffic through both lane assignment and signalling can be optimally coordinated with current traffic management systems? A solid knowledge from public transport will be utilized to expand the priority schemes to include commercial traffic in urban environment. Both time and willingness to pay may be incorporated in a priority hier archy. The project will elaborate sensor technology to obtain and implement dynamic route guidance for commercial traffic. This allows an assessment of benefit adapted for both commercial traffic and society through a demonstrator and a larger scale simul ation model. The willingness to pay for improved transport quality will also be investigated in PRINT. The PRINT project will be carried out in close cooperation with international partners and ongoing relevant research projects. Such cooperation ensur es results of international quality, knowledge exchange and mutual benefit, and broader dissemination of results. For the Norwegian industry as a whole, the priority within the transport system will be of major importance to reduce transport costs, impr ove the accuracy and reliability of deliveries and reduce loss (goods damaged or lost during transport). These benefits will improve Norwegian competitiveness and bring industry and our transport systems to the front of knowledge and competence from an in ternational viewpoint. A successful project will cause implementation of priority for commercial transport in Norwegian cities within a few years.
