Interdisciplinary Risk Assessment of Integrated Operations addressing Human and Organisational Factors

The objective of RIO is to provide important contributions to risk management of integrated operations (IO) by developing new knowledge, frameworks and guidance for risk assessment in petroleum activities. It is a widely accepted view that technical/quan titative risk analysis and management based on historical data is not sufficient to capture the novel, emergent and systemic risks of IO, especially when the impact of human and organisational factors are brought into consideration. Gaining the benefits o f IO combined with tolerable - or even reduced - risk, demands that the established approaches to risk are supplemented by approaches that address the human and organisational issues from a contemporary perspective, within an overall framework of risk gov ernance. A common framework for generation and exchange of knowledge and for joint reasoning on risk between different actors, is needed. The project will provide important knowledge for SINTEF and NTNU to maintain a world class position within safety a nd reliability and to improve the teaching material for the petroleum courses at NTNU. The anticipated application potential of the project is great du to the financial support from the the major international oil companies and suppliers in the IO Cente r at NTNU: StatoilHydro ASA, TOTAL E&P NORGE AS, ConocoPhillips Skandinavia AS, Shell Technology Norway A/S, Eni Norge AS, Gaz de France Norge AS, Kongsberg Maritime AS, Aker Elektro AS, FMC Kongsberg Subsea AS, IBM AS, and DNV. The RIO project will be carried out in close cooperation with Petroleum Safety Authority Norway (PSA). Thus, project results should provide important knowledge for PSA when providing advice and stipulating premises to ensure that the players in the petroleum activities maintain high standards of health, environment, safety and emergency preparedness.
