After decades of research, we do not have evidenced-based explanations for how or why psychotherapy works, and the ?greatest casualty of this lack of knowledge is the public at large? (Kazdin, 2008, pp 147). Although there is a large amount of theoretical explanation about effectiveness drawn from clinical experience, a gap remains between these insights and the operationalization of theoretical concepts that can generate empirical knowledge to guide treatment. However, recent research results from two in novative and well-operationalized measures point to the next step in psychotherapy research; the intensive mapping of treatment process in great breadth and depth. To the best of our knowledge, such research is not being conducted elsewhere in the world, and Norway, with its rich tradition in process and outcome research, has the opportunity to take the first steps. The goal for the PROCMAP program is to build contextual knowledge about how change happens so that therapy can better meet the needs of the c onsumers.
