"Theorizing Risk, Money and Moralities in Migration" will develop social-science theory in areas of particular relevance to the study of international migration. The project will explore the assessment and management of risk, the roles of money and materi al wealth in interpersonal relationships, and the mo-ralities which inform migration decisions and subsequent transnational relationships. These themes will be examined in relation to three cross-cutting dimensions: the mediating roles of geographical spa ce, and the dichotomy between self and others. The themes and dimensions, and the relation between them, are discussed in detail below. The project will consist of two parts: 1) a theoretical component, based largely on secondary sources and material from previous research, carried out by senior researchers; 2) an empirical study in the form of a doctoral sub-project. The empirical component will address migration from Africa to Europe. The project will be undertaken by the International Peace Research In stitute, Oslo (PRIO) in cooperation with Fafo Institute for Applied International Studies. ("Theorizing Risk, Money and Moralities in Migration" is designed on the basis of a related proposal, "Self and sacrifice in high-risk migration that involved a co mparative empirical study and extensive international collaboration. The funding granted by the Research Council of Norway did not allow for the project to be carried out, and a new project has therefore been developed around the same theoretical themes).
