Solution for sustainable transportation will in most cases benefit from light weight and Norwegian industry has a globally outstanding position on light weight solutions. This KMB will build on this knowledge to create new knowledge on manufacturing of li ght weight solutions for sustainable transportation. Higher material and process performance opens new potentials, and the KMB will develop new manufacturing processes with simultaneous ecological and economic sustainability. The results should give Norwe gian industry a potential for taking a globally leading role in providing sustainable light weight solutions and thereby both contribute to saving the planet as well as increasing Norwegian manufacturing industry competiveness. Recycling and re-use is on e of the keys for sustainability. The ability to produce high performance products for the transportation industry based on lower grade input materials is an important contribution to increase re-use and recycling, and this is one of the cornerstones of t he research in the KMB. Furthermore the KMB will focus on materials and manufacturing process technology as well as Eco-design on all parts of the product life cycle. To achieve the best solutions on both in ecological and product performance, there is a need to have a holistic view. The KMB will develop and find new use of Eco-design methods for the design of new eco-friendly materials, manufacturing processes and the related products. This will include performance indicators, a knowledge database, toolb oxes and new models for holistic sustainable manufacturing and material selection. Emphasis will be put on finding industrial viable solutions for Eco-Design along the complete product life cycle.
