Development of methods and guidelines for safe design of moonpools

Awarded: NOK 7.0 mill.

Project Manager:

Project Number:

192895

Project Period:

2009 - 2011

Based on earlier experiences with various moonpool designs on offshore operation vessels, more knowledge is wanted to improve future designs for better safety and operability. Large wave responses inside moonpools can cause hazards if water reaches deck l evel. Operability of a vessel is often limited by wave response characteristics of a moonpool. Scope of the work is to describe, understand and document the physics of water responses inside moonpools and development of new methods and guidelines for des igning moonpools. To be able to do this we need theoretical studies, model tests and full scale measurements to be able to produce best possible tools for future designs. The final target for the project is to come up with well documented moonpool des ign guidelines. To ensure correct use of guidelines the theory and methodology need to be documented in an easy and comprehensible format.
