Effective work within and coordination across ICT teams

Awarded: NOK 15.3 mill.

Technological growth is vital for the sustainability of our society. The development of innovative technology is also put forth as the solution to global environmental, humanitarian and economical problems. At the heart of modern technological solutions, there is software. Software implements ever more of the crucial functionality, safety, and reliability features in technology. It is therefore vital to develop correct software in a predictable manner. However, there is substantial evidence that most of today`s software projects fail in this respect. The socio-technical nature of software development sets it apart from other engineering disciplines: The cost of a software system arises from its highly complex human- and technology-intensive developmen t process. Future demands will add dramatically to this complexity. Meeting these challenges requires new organizational structures of software development. Crucial is the transition from traditional command-and-control management to collaborative leader ship. This transition poses non-trivial challenges regarding effective teamwork and coordination across teams. TeamIT`s industrial and research partners have therefore laid down its primary and secondary objectives in order to best meet these challenges. Verifiable results will be process and product innovations on the following levels. (1) Company level: - Transitions to autonomous teams at the participating industry partners. - Company-adapted versions of toolbox. (2) National level: - Industr y seminars/workshops. (3) International level: - Toolbox for the successful transition to autonomous software development teams. - Industry seminars/workshops. - Dissemination of practical results in industry-focused magazines. The scientific results will provide the necessary empirical and theoretical underpinning for the above process and product innovations.
