Intercomparison and Knowledge transfer for trace analysis of persistent organic pollutants (POP) in the Arctic environment.

Awarded: NOK 0.30 mill.

As an extension of the already ongoing NORTHPOP initiative (185104/S50), the Norwegian Institute for Air Research (NILU) in co-operation with AMAP (Oslo, Norway), Akvaplan-niva (Tromsø, Norway), the Tromsø University, Typhoon (Obninsk and St. Petersburg, Russia) and PINRO (Murmansk, Russia) intend to carry out an intercomparison study on the analytical methods used for biota and abiotic samples from the Arctic environment. Typical monitoring sample types will be chosen by AMAP. The Russian partners (PINRO and Typhoon) will be responsible for sampling and distribution to all participants. Quality control protocols in accordance to the criteria?s given in the AMAP recommendations will be developed and used for the intercomparison exercise. In addition, scie ntist exchange will assure an effective knowledge transfer between the Norwegian and Russian institutions involved. We plan to Provide a scientific platform for information exchange and networking between Norwegian and Russian Environmetnal chemists Devel op a scientific validated tool box to improve the method and data quality within AMAPs environmental POP monitoring Improve the availability and accessibily of data on environmental pollutants from the Russian Arctic.
