Norwegian participation to the Nordic Tier-1 collaboration

Awarded: NOK 10.0 mill.

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN will push the energy frontier out by a factor of ten in 2009 and is expected to provide clues to many riddles in high-energy physics, such as the origin of mass, the nature of dark matter and new phases of ordinary matter. Through the CERN-collaboration, Norway is committed to contribute electronic resources for the processing and analysis of data produced by LHC. For this, Norway participates in the Nordic Tier-1 component of the world-wide LHC Computing Grid (WLC G) collaboration. The Nordic Tier-1 is in 24/7 operation since 2007 and has proven to be a significant contributor to the WLCG collaboration. The main objective of this application is to secure the financing of the Norwegian contribution to the Nordic Ti er-1 collaboration for 2011 and 2012. The total life-time of WLCG is expected to last beyond 2020.
