Testing f(R)-gravity on galactic scale and on growth of cosmological perturbations

Awarded: NOK 84,999

In collaboration with Prof. Salvatore Capozziello and Prof. D.F. Mota, I will study the possibility to explain gravitational structures in universe by using extended theories of gravity instead of General Relativity (GR) based models. One intends to use f ourth order theories based on replacing the scalar curvature R in the Hilbert-Einstein action with a generic analytic function f(R) which should be reconstructed starting from data and physically motivated issues. We are interested to test these models at galactic scales. Galaxies are good test for gravity theories because of showing a wide range of behaviors: from elliptical to spiral ones, the latter being more dark matter dominated than the former and in a different way. Our main purpose won't be only the application of f(R)-gravity but also, if positive results will be derived, their inclusion in a more general and self-consistent theoretical apparatus which can be proposed as a good alternative to GR in explaining universe and its structure.
