Russian-Norwegian collaboration already established in a Fram Arctic Laboratory funded PhD project, will be expanded by developing joint field work in Svalbard fjords and adjacent shelf waters. The field work will focus on seawater properties (temperature , salinity, particulate matter, optics, tracers as well as currents), with a long term goal to detect interannual variability in Atlantic Water and freshwater influence in Svalbard waters, and the implications for biology. The proposed field operations wi ll be twofold, organized by AARI with NPI participants, and organized by NPI with AARI participants. AARI will organize two surveys in Grønfjorden in April 2010 and 2011. Based on fjord ice conditions, the field platform will be either snow scooters on fj ord ice, or small boat/tug-boat. These field operations will have 3 Russian and 2 Norwegian participants, and accommodation will be given in Barentsburg. If ice conditions permits, parallel sampling in Isfjorden and adjacent shelf waters will be made by a UNIS student cruise. NPI will incorporate Russian participation in a yearly summer/fall SIOS cruise. The proposed collaboration fits naturally as a Russian contribution to the SIOS collaboration established between NPI and other institutions with ongoing monitoring programs in Svalbard waters.
