Workshop on survey methods for estimating catch, effort and economic value of widely dispersed marine recreational fisheries

Awarded: NOK 99,999

The goal of this multidisciplinary workshop is to develop collaborative research on cost-effective methods that can be used to monitor catch and effort and to quantify the economic effects in diffuse marine recreational fisheries in Europe. The importanc e of quantifying catches in marine recreational fisheries is recognized in the EU and ICES community, as well as in Norway. New data collections regulations (DCR) in the EU focus on obtaining reliable estimates of total removals from fish and shellfish st ocks, including removals by recreational and part-time fishers. The Norwegian Ministry of Fisheries and Coastal Affairs have stated that the lack of research-based knowledge on recreational fisheries including tourist fisheries makes it difficult to decid e on future management measures to secure sustainable management, as well as an economically viable distribution of coastal fishery resources. The focus of the workshop will be on methods that are applicable for large-scale diffused recreational fisher ies without fishing license requirements, and hence should be of interest to many EU nations. Cost-effective survey methods that can be applied for resident recreational fishers as well as non-residents (not listed in phone books) will be considered. The Norwegian and French marine recreational/tourist fisheries are complex and will serve as two of the case studies. The knowledge-transfer through collaboration with national and international partners will inform ongoing and future research on recreationa l fishing/fishing tourism. The workshop will cover surveys of recreational fisheries that employ the combination of phone-interviews and catch diaries. This approach has been successfully used by our Australian partner. and is being implemented in France by our French partner. Methods that increase coverage will be considered. The workshop will benefit from the participation of U.S., Australian and EU partners in addition to national partners.
