Enhanced Minimally Invasive Therapy,- e-MIT

Cancer, cardiovascular and lung lesions together cover substantial amounts of patients in society. Various therapeutic approach exists for these patients. In general, minimally invasive therapy (MIT) gives less trauma for patients and reduces hospital sta y and costs. Navigation and imaging are important technologies for being able to perform minimal invasive procedures and are integrated and used in daily practice in some clinical applications, but limited in other although there is a demand for it. In th e e-MIT project, clinical personnel from various application areas, have identified navigation and intraoperative imaging technologies as tools that can introduce or enhance minimal invasive treatment procedures, and hence improve patient treatment. The i dentified clinical areas are abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), liver and pancreatic lesions, spine lesions and lung lesions. Based on user demands, technology will be disclosed through an iterative research process of adaptation, development and clinical r esearch. Innovation and new clinical practice can then be obtained (Figure 1 in project description attached). Through identification of clinical demands and common technological research challenges and solutions, interdisciplinary clinical research in t he e-MIT project can improve patient treatment in a cost efficient way. Collaboration both regionally, nationally and internationally will be performed with other universities, hospitals and industry. The project will educate one PhD in medical technolog y and explore competence and new knowledge to be disseminated through publication and conference presentations. Commercialization of new methods and solutions is relevant and will be explored. The e-MIT project is relevant due to the health care demands i n society as well as to the FRIMED program, which aims to improve clinical research nationally and internationally
