PET/PEPT and numerical study of pneumatic conveying and dust lifting

Awarded: NOK 6.4 mill.

The project described in this proposal aims at studying the pneumatic conveying and dust lifting processes both through experimental and numerical methods. Due to the recent creation of the new Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Center by the Bergen Hauke land University Hospital in collaboration with the University of Bergen, the new particle tracking technique called Positron Emission Particle Tracking (PEPT) has been made available for researchers in the Bergen area. PET is a medical imaging technique e xtensively used in fields such as: oncology, neurology, cardiology, neuropsychology, psychiatry and pharmacology. The PEPT technique has derived from this, and this break-through discovery in the field of particle tracking will enable us to experimentally determine the basic phenomena that govern particle entrainment processes (i.e. particle interactions (collisions, adhesions), lift forces, fluid-particle interactions) by following particle behaviour as it occurs. We plan to make use of the benefits that this powerful new measuring technique brings to process technology research but also to break new ground in developing the method further. Continuous improvement of this method would bring important advances both for process technology research but also for the medical world. Results of the experimental study will be used to build and assess new and considerably improved mathematical models that would mimic particle transport processes as close to reality as possible. The benefits of such models are inva luable for the improvement of numerous process technologies as well as for process safety concerns. The results from this research will further establish Norway in the forefront of the international gas and oil industry and help to establish Bergen as a c enter for PET and PEPT related research.
