Shipborne CO2 emissions are estimated to be 1019 million tn/yr and are expected to triple by 2050. Given the increasing global warming there is an urgent need of innovative solutions for reducing ship emissions. This becomes particularly important as new CO2 emission regulations are developed by IMO. Shipping has the potential for in-situ CO2 capture. However, it is necessary for organisations and stakeholders to perform interdisciplinary innovative research while drawing on existing knowledge from land-b ased systems. This project aims to develop and screen alternative designs to derive a front-end design for a process for carbon capture and storage (CCS) onboard ships. The method will be based on the chemical capture of CO2 and its temporary storage unt il discharged at next port. The dynamic behaviour of the process will be modelled and simulated to analyse the performance of the capture system under different cruising regimes and the dynamic transitions between them. The design of such a process will n eed to take into account the peculiarities of the marine environment (limited space/access to utilities, need for energy efficiency, constant movement, etc.) and the need to transport and store CO2 in a confined space. The project will include operability , safety/hazards and controllability analysis, design of the control mechanisms and process optimisation considering the volume, footprint and energy efficiency of the resulting equipment. Logistics interactions with the port facilities and the special re quirements of storage will also be considered. New design guidelines for maritime CCS systems will be developed. The concept is completely new with no current end-to-end solution available; we will thus provide the European shipping industries with a sou nd basis for the development of market-ready CCS systems for ships. The developments will provide the parties with significant IP-related benefits, know-how and access to a potentially large worldwide market.
