The project will be carried out with basis in two main research dimensions
I. The horizontal dimension, where the retail sector and the consumption phase will be most important with a broad focus on all relevant types of food products
II. The vertical d imension, where a number of value chains for specific food products that are of special interest with respect to waste from the food sector are studied,
The research will be organized in a number of different work packages where the first five have dir ect relationship to the problem areas of the project.
WP1: Studies of waste generation and reasons for waste generation in the retail sector (Ostfold Research responsible)
WP2: Studies of waste generation and reasons for waste generation by the consumers (SIFO responsible)
WP3: Case studies of waste generation in a number of food value chains (Ostfold Research responsible)
WP4: Studies of measures to prevent waste of food in the total value chains of food products (Nofima responsible)
WP5: Dissemination of results (all responsible)
WP6: Project management (Ostfold Research responsible).
One PhD-students and a 25% post doc candidate will participate in the project and do most of the research work. A post doc program will be carried out with the focus o n development of methodologies for studies of waste generation in the total value chain of food products. A Ph.D project in sociology will concentrate on the tension between rational choice theories and the routines of ordinary consumption.
