The Phase I study found that there is little information available from national and international sources on the effects of amine emissions to air during carbon capture. Several knowledge gaps have been identified, and ExSIRA will identify and close many of these gaps. To be able to estimate effects of amine emissions to air, two main activities are necessary: -To determine the load -To determine the critical level of impact where the load has effects The ExSIRA project will investigate the impact on ecosystems and the corrosive effects for both the primary amines emitted in the atmosphere by large scale CO2 capture plants, and their airborne formed photo-oxidant products. To achieve this objective a multidisciplinary approach is necessary involvin g mathematical modelling of physical/chemical processes in the atmosphere on several scales as well as lab and field experimental studies of aquatic eco-toxicology, terrestrial ecotoxicology, and corrosion to determine the toxicity of specific substances. The study will bring together a unique group of top level scientists from the Norwegian institutes of Air Research, Water Research and Nature Research and the University of Oslo Department of Geosciences. The research will also benefit from the exchange of knowledge with scientists at the Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO- Energy Technology and CSIRO-Marine and Atmospheric Research). Industry will be included as an active partner in the project to ensure th at the user participation is embedded in the activities. Regular workshops will be held and information on the project will be made available through a web page. The project?s most important contribution to industry will be a clear assessment of the pote ntial environmental risks of selected amines used in CO2 capture, thus enhancing the technologies development process.
