Geoillustrator - Sketch-based illustrative earth models visualization

Awarded: NOK 10.2 mill.

-

This KMB application addresses an important gap in available software tools for the oil and gas industry. There are currently no easy-to-use geo-scientific tools available that support quick sketching of ideas, e.g. in situations where there is not suffic ient data for exact detailed modeling. We therefore propose new types of modeling and visualization tools that can facilitate improved understanding of geology. The main objective of this project is to develop methods for rapid and intuitive digital sketc hing of current subsurface geology and its historical evolution into its current state. Sketch-based illustrative methods will help the geoscientist externalize and visualize, on the computer screen, mental images and hypotheses. This is for instance use ful early in the exploratory process when no or little data exist and uncertainties are high. Hypothesis creation of current geology and how it has developed into the current state will be supported. The methods developed can have impact on all parts of the exploration and production work flows where gaining better understanding of geology is important. During the exploration phase, utilization of sketch based illustrative methods can lead to increased discoveries. Furthermore, the methods can lead to r educed costs due to improved decision processes in connection with drilling, intervention, integrated operations and real-time reservoir management. The methods developed will be verified with relevant use cases. One of the use cases will be addressed th rough a PhD study, where the methods will be applied on potential reservoirs of the Barents Sea region for reducing geological uncertainty through studies of existing and new data. Our vision is to create a world-leading research group with focus on sket ch-based illustrative earth model visualization. We believe Norway is in a position to take a leading role in this area, given that high quality research of sufficient volume can be established soon enough.
