New model of an interdisciplinary research on sustainable development in the context of the current environmental and economic crisis

Awarded: NOK 0.11 mill.

We wish to apply for a grant towards a research stay at the Woods Institute at Stanford University, USA, in the period 1 March - 1 July 2010. The grant will cover travel and accommodation expenses, as well as an organization of a joint, UiO-Stanford semi nar in order to build a common research programme and, hopefully, future scholarly exchange. The main objective of the research stay at Stanford is to develop a new model of an interdisciplinary research on sustainable development in the context of the current environmental and economic crisis. This project is a continuation both of our current research project CERES21 (see http://www.ceres21.org), and our earlier dialogue with our prominent Stanford partners: Prof. Paul Ehrlich, Prof. Stephen Schneider , and Prof. Don Kennedy. Stanford University has an international reputation of being one of the world's top centers with regard to climate research, and flags many Nobel prize winners in its staff. The point of departure for our collaboration with Stan ford is our current international research project, CERES21, financed by NFR, on sustainable development for the 21st century on three continents. We hope that the stay at Stanford will add a transatlantic dimension to the project. One of the objectives of our US visit is to start an exchange programme between the University of Oslo and Stanford. In particular, we are interested in mobilizing students and younger researchers who work on questions related to climate and sustainable development. In conc lusion we would like to mention that the presiding idea of our activities at Stanford is our common interest in exploring the ways in which the current environmental crisis can be solved through a creative dialogue between the natural and the social scien tists, the humanists and the business community.
