Voicing the Voiceless: Two studies of international news journalism in a rapidly changing global news landscape.

Awarded: NOK 0.24 mill.

I hereby apply for mobility grants to work in New York for the academic year 2010-2011, affiliated with the Department of Media, Culture and Communication, NYU Steinhardt. At NYU, I will work on two research projects: Firstly, I aim to conduct fieldwor k in Al Jazeera English's (AJE) American bureaux. AJE is the first global English-language satellite news channel broadcasting from the Middle East. It is particularly interesting to study AJE in the American context: Since 9/11, the relationship between the US Administration and the Al Jazeera Network has been tense and contradictory. Today, the American political establishment and popular opinion still largely associate the Al Jazeera Network with Osama bin Laden. And, moreover, because the channel is n ot properly distributed to American viewers, these misconceptions of the 'Terrorist Channel' are hard to counter. The aim of the study of AJE's American newsrooms, supplemented by my PhD research on the editorial agenda of the channel, is to publish as t he first authoritative book on the channel. Secondly, in collaboration with Professor Rodney Benson at NYU, I will continue the research initiated by the IMK-based research group Mediation of Migration (MoM). The aim of the project group is to develop a comparative research project that will investigate and compare the television coverage of migration in a selection of countries, from the senders (strategic actors such as institutions, organizations, or politicians), through the media coverage (nationa l TV news), to the receivers (national audiences). There has been a significant lack of international comparative analysis of political communication. To address these issues we plan to conduct an extensive comparative analysis of national and TV news. B oth projects critically investigate international news journalism in a rapidly changing global news landscape, by emphasizing who get to speak their mind in the media, and more important, all those who are silenced.
