Crossover Research. Well constructed systems biology

Awarded: NOK 3.3 mill.

-

Systems biology calls for the innovation of comprehensive experimental systems implying novel forms of organization and collaboration, materially and socially. The need for such an effort has to be demonstrated in terms of the answerability of pertinent r esearch questions. Systems biology will itself also be further articulated in the process where research questions, technological apparatus, theoretical frameworks and interpreted empirical data are reciprocally adjusted. This project is situated in the c hallenges a research group led by Astrid Lægreid at NTNU faces in searching for such a demonstration of systems biology approach in the contexts of diagnosis, prevention and treatment of gastrointestinal disease. This project take the need for joint ethic al-political and epistemic quality measures as a point of entrance for the integration of humanities in the interdisciplinary research group needed to demonstrate viable systems biology approaches. The project will be organized in three interrelated wor k packages. First. The experimental system of Lægreid's research group will be studied as it will constitute a dynamic "model system" of systems biology for this project. Second, this model system will provide an experimental platform for improvements of the quality of the systems biology both in terms of epistemic and ethical-political measures. Third, This research activity will itself be subjected to reflexive scrutiny. The aim is to critically evaluate the limitations and possibilities of integrated p rojects for the improvement of the quality of scientific work in the making.
