LAND: Regional planning and wild reindeer management

Awarded: NOK 4.5 mill.

-

The Norwegian government has initiated regional planning an instrument for wild reindeer regions as in order to protect wild reindeer lands against future habitat loss to piecemeal development. Reindeer is a vulnerable high value resources increasingly th reatened by development. The current species management is no longer sufficient to face challenges related to land use and development. The project focuses on and regional land planning as an instrument for the new wild reindeer regions. It will examine w hether regional planning is a sufficient tool for the wild reindeer management, and to what extent the planning system is capable of developing a more comprehensive wild reindeer policy? We have selected the mountain systems of southern Norway as home to some of the last populations of wild reindeer in Europe. The up-scaling from local to regional level management are a formidable challenge with the ultimate goal of striking a balance between use and protection of highly valued resources. Regional plannin g is a weak planning institution, but have been recently strengthen by the potential for approving legally binding regional plans for land development. This is a large scale experiment where we can examine how such national policy and interventions can be a toolbox in more sustainable natural resource management.
