Electromagnetic transients in future power systems

Awarded: NOK 12.9 mill.

-

The future power system is going to be highly complex: integration of renewables, smart grids, voltage upgrades, more usage of long cables. Its implementation will require extensive computer simulations during its planning an engineering phases. Existing simulation tools have limited accuracy for representing some critical components such as transformers and cables. The project will produce models that are sufficiently accurate and compatible with available circuit simulators, and make use of the models in system simulation studies in order to pinpoint bad configurations. The models will be available for other users. Research tasks: 1. Review of future trends 2. Component modeling a) Transformer modeling -Improve non-linear core representation i ncluding hysteretic model -Develop high frequency modeling capability from measurements -Develop wide-band (universal) transformer model -Develop detailed model for internal overvoltage calculations b) Cable modeling - Verify and further extend applicab ility of magnetic steel armour model c) Circuit breaker modeling -Provide arc model for vacuum breaker d) Instrument transformer modeling 3. Demo simulations - Investigate system overvoltages caused by high-frequency interaction between cables and tra nsformers (switching events and faults) - Investigate winding overvoltages caused by restrikes in vacuum breaker -Phenomena related to energization and faults in power systems with long cables - Other 4. International cooperation - Membership in CIGRE WG C4.307 5. Dissemination of results Deliverables: - Measurement and modeling procedures for transformers, cables, VCBs, instrument transformers - Demo simulation of transient phenomena 1 PhD, 1 post doc, 9 journal papers, reports (One additional pos t doc can be hired if additional funding is attracted).
