International conventions on biodiversity identify habitat destruction and release of alien species as major threats to the environment. The use of seed for ecological restoration and landscape management in compliance with the new Nature Diversity Act (2 009) is hampered by: uncertainties about what is site specific seed, lack of site-specific seed mixtures, uncertainties about success factors for seed establishment along ecological gradients, and limited knowledge of the impact of sowing on long-term veg etation development. Our whole-chain project proposal meets these challenges through five work packages. In WP 1, ten model species important for ecological restoration will be defined and seed and leaf material collected across the country. In WP 2, the genetic diversity of the species will be determined using molecular genetic methods and the results used to establish seed transfer zones. In WP 3, multiplication of site-specific seed will be developed in collaboration with seed growers and national seed inspection agencies. In WP 4, key traits for seedling establishment will be identified and the intra- and interspecific variation in these traits documented. In WP 5, field trials will be laid out at several sites across Norway to examine vegetation esta blishment from site-specific seed mixtures after various types of disturbances, and soil heaps / road verges seeded 8-40 years ago will be resurveyed to clarify the long-term impact of sowing on ecological succession. Behind this proposal are four researc h institutes/universities, five public authorities, two hydropower companies and the Norwegian Seed Grower Association. Scientists from France, Austria and Iceland will participate as external experts. The communication plan includes six scientific papers , two Norwegian booklets and three national seminars on ecological restoration. The overall budget for 2011-2014 is 10.6 mill. NOK, of which 5.0 mill. NOK is requested from of RCNs programme 'Nature-based industry'.
