Rigid joints for large timber structures, dr.gr.stip.

Awarded: NOK 5.5 mill.

-

Modern load-carrying structures in timber are highly engineered products at the end of the value chain. Development of rigid joints will make large multi-storey buildings in timber more flexible and attractive, and extend the feasible range of timber brid ges. With documentation of strength, stiffness and general structural behavior, more and larger timber structures can be made in the urban parts of the country. Rigid joints will give more competitive structures and increased possibilities for further i ndustrialization. The knowledge about large moment carrying connections is sparse and the project is expected to have a significant impact on the state-of-the-art in this field. The technologicaly approach is to use of large threaded rods and metallic c oupling parts. The following knowledge/results are expected to be achieved: - Experimental behavior of large threaded bars installed with small inclinations to grain. - Experimental behavior of rigid joints with threaded rods and metallic coupling parts. - Numerical models valid for the behavior of threaded rods. - Numerical models valid for the behavior of rigid connections based on threaded rods. - Analytical models for verification of axial stiffness and strength of threaded bars. - Simplified analyti cal methods aimed at practical design of rigid joints. Other quantitative results of the project will be: - 1 PhD Theses. - 4 -6 Masters of Science and their theses. - 3 or more international and refereed publications. - 4 or more international publicat ions at conferences. - 4 or more national seminars for professionals in timber engineering.
