Advanced mobile broad-band seismic stations

Awarded: NOK 5.1 mill.

Project Number:

208293

Application Type:

Project Period:

2011 - 2018

Location:

This application is for funding a new infrastructure of [up to] 30 advanced mobile broad-band seismic stations for use by Norwegian geosciences institutes conducting research within solid Earth physics (NORSAR, the University of Bergen, the University of Oslo and the Geological Survey of Norway). The acquisition costs are estimated at NOK 5,100,000 and we anticipate that the instrument pool, if funded, will be fully operational by late 2013. NORSAR will take the responsibility of hosting and maintaining t he instruments and a Board of Representatives from NORSAR, UiB, UiO and NGU will coordinate the use of the instrument pool. The proposed infrastructure will, for the first time, provide Norwegian geophysical institutions and universities with a national pool of mobile seismic instrumentation. It will enable Norway to contribute to both national and international cooperative scientific projects in seismology which require a large pool of such instrumentation, and where Norwegian scientists previously have been fully dependent upon contributions from other countries in order to participate. The main technological and scientific challenges to be addressed are: - large-scale tomographic studies of the Earth's crust, mantle and core -multidisciplinary regio nal studies of crustal and lithospheric deformation processes - studies of earthquake aftershock activity - seismic reflection and refraction studies on land NORSAR has adequate facilities and skills for hosting the infrastructure equipment. The NORSAR Field Maintenance Centre, located at Hamar, already has suitable space for storing the new mobile broad-band stations together with the existing spare equipment for the permanent stations. NORSAR also has a highly competent IT department, which will also provide for the necessary services in relation to maintenance and operation of the new infrastructure equipment, including data archiving, retrieval, exchange and analysis.
