A national subcellular imaging platform

Microscopy has become a cornerstone of modern science. Most research projects in cell biology and biomedical imaging contain a significant part of imaging. Because of the critical contribution of imaging, a considerable number of research groups have acquired imaging equipment over the years. However, as developments in the field are occurring at a rapid pace, techniques that were sufficiently strong 5 to 10 years ago are now outdated. Because it is impossible for smaller individual research groups to keep up with the newer developments, both financially and regarding expertise, imaging equipment and expertise needs to be organized into publicly available centralized nodes with sufficient critical mass. The Oslo-NorMIC node in subcellular molecular imaging has for the last 5-10 years developed expertise and provided imaging equipment and advanced imaging techniques to a broad audience. This has been highly successful, and to remain at the front in the imaging field and for the Norwegian imaging to remain competitive we need to invest in new quantitative techniques, advanced microscopes and expand volume for the high number of users. In this context we aim to introduce at our publicly available imaging platform new tools such as TIRF, FLIM, Optical tweezers, Super-resolution, and CLEM, and an upgrade and expansion of existing microscopes. This investment will guarantee cutting-edge methods for the Norwegian research community in locally and nationally prioritized research fields such as the life sciences, nanotech, medical sciences, and environment. It will also position subcellular imaging in Oslo forward in a European context where infrastructure initiatives and planning on a European scale are now happening.
