Microstructured Reactors for Compact Conversion of Natural Gas to Liquid Fuels

Awarded: NOK 7.1 mill.

-

The main focus on the researcher project is on the environmentally friendly utilization of natural gas components for the production of liquid fuels. Given Norways position as a gas producer and exporter in the future and the possible vast natural gas res ources in the Arctic, it is vital from an economic as well as technical perspective to build competence within technologies that could be vital to natural gas monetization. Economic routes for direct conversion of natural gas to liquid fuels have not yet been achieved and methane conversion to liquid fuels will probably need synthesis gas as an intermediate step. Chemical conversion via synthesis gas to synthetic diesel (Fischer-Tropsch synthesis), methanol and dimethyl ether (DME) are considered as viabl e solutions for natural gas monetization. Chemical conversion of natural gas to liquid fuels benefits economically from large scale. However, many applications such as offshore production with small/associated or remote gas fields could benefit from com pact and modular conversion technology. Microstructured reactors could be especially suitable for the F-T, methanol and DME syntheses, for which highly exothermic and complex reaction systems are linked to the reactor performance. Advantages include incre ased product yields, improved energy efficiency, smaller reactor footprint, inherent safety, and reduced capital costs. Inherent safety and minimized risk of emissions to the environment is particularly relevant in vulnerable and climatically challenging areas, e.g. off-shore and/or far to the North. Using our knowledge on microstructured reactors and our in-house facilities at NTNU and SINTEF for studying gas-to-liquid conversion technologies at realistic conditions, including microstructured reactors d eveloped in cooperation with Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, the suggested researcher project is aiming at increased knowledge of natural gas conversion technology to liquid fuels in microstructured reactors
