ELIXIR.NO - a Norwegian ELIXIR node

Awarded: NOK 49.4 mill.

-

The Norwegian ELIXIR Node will contribute to the European infrastructure by providing competence and resources towards the marine domain including fish and microbial genomics, and towards biomedicine with a focus on biobanks. The Node will implement an e- infrastructure supporting life science research and development. Fish genomic is important both for management of wild fisheries and for a sustainable economical aquaculture industry. Marine microbial genomics is central in bioprospecting and environmenta l monitoring. The Node´s activities will include implementation and operation of supporting databases and tools. The central health registries together with the population based and clinical biobanks present opportunities for better understanding of a num ber of diseases and require specialized integrated bioinformatics resources. The Node will implement and operate NELS (Norwegian E-Infrastructure for the Life Sciences), an activity that will be closely coordinated with National and European e-infrastruct ure projects. NELS will be implemented with emphasis on adherence to standards and aims to serve as a showcase for integrative bioinformatics and e-infrastructures. The Norwegian Node will be constructed based on the National technology platform for Bioin formatics supported by the Norwegian FUGE program for functional genomics and it will be coordinated from Bergen and include activity in Oslo, Trondheim, Tromsø, and Ås. This distributed structure allows the Node to benefit from relevant research activity at the largest Norwegian universities and also improves its ability to provide training and support to end-users. The Node will serve the Norwegian user community over a broader spectrum aiding users in academia, government, and industry to take advantag e of ELIXIR resources.
