This project is a cooperation between NorBioLeads AS, a new bioprospecting company, and the R&D partners SINTEF, NTNU, MEDINA (Spain) and GINA (Russia). The basis for the project is a marine biobank, results and technologies developed in the biopropecting projects performed at SINTEF/NTNU in 2003-2009. The main objective in the projects is to isolate and characterize new antimicrobial and anticancer lead compounds with potential for development into human drugs by exploration of marine bacterial strains. The marine biobank consists of approximately 10000 strains (mainly actinomycetes) from the Trondheims fjord. Earlier partial characterization of the biobank reveals its significant potential for discovery of novel natural products with antimicrobial and a nticancer properties. From previous projects at SINTEF/NTNU we have available almost 100 isolates producing compounds active against multiresistant bacteria or cancer cells, representing an excellent starting point for this project. In addition to furthe r characterization of available hits, we will continue the search for new compounds in the biobank. This will be done by using refined cultivation and targeted screening technology. Important in this work will be a robust established pipeline for lead can didates including state of the art equipment for high throughput screening, production and purification, structure elucidation and in vivo and in vitro testing. The project will benefit from many years of targeted technology development at the R&D partne rs aiming at identifying, producing, evaluating and commercializing new biopharmaceutical processes and products. This project is in excellent compliance with the national strategy plan for marine bioprospecting; i)the basis is a nationally important bio bank; ii) the R&D focuses on technology development for efficient identification of valuable products from biobanks and iii) the results is the basis for establishment of a new national bioprospecting company.
