Based on the thematic priorities of the coming RENERGI 2011 call, the recommendations given by the program board and the ideas presented in the original application, the PES contribution from NRC will be used to make a project proposal that increase the p roject quality rating and reduce the scope of the original application. This will be achieved by finding cost effective energy optimization potentials of the involved plants within waste heat reduction or re-use that fits within the new call. A revised c onsortium of production plants, academia and equipment vendors will be build to fit the primary objective of the project. The first relevant theme of the revised application is a project where improved production methods by focusing on reduced production of waste heat are achieved. This can be done by exergy analysis that involves development of process understanding and advanced thermodynamics and tools. The second relevant theme is reuse of the waste heat within the production through development of ad vanced process integration methods. The third relevant theme is to (further) develop methods that use the waste heat as a source for usable energy production by development of new methods for electricity or other high grade energy forms. This usable energ y counts as reduced energy use for the plants. The last relevant theme is to develop new methods for extracting usable heat from high temperature sources like molten metal and slag from semicontinuous production. Phase change materials and air bottom cycl e are relevant and novel technologies. One or more of these methods is expected to fit into the new RENERGI call, and is planned developed in close cooperation with the plants. Project meetings between industries and academia/technology providers are p lanned in order to focus on the right problem definitions and possible solutions.
