RENERGI-Fremtidens rene energisystemer

China: Norwegian-Chinese battery network

Awarded: NOK 0.40 mill.

With the increasing awareness of global warming issues, the renewable energy technologies, have received tremendous attention recently, and is identified as one of the prioritized areas for the infrastructure call. Various battery technologies are a consi dered crucial components in the future energy system. This applies to transportation technologies, with a high number of hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles about to enter the market. Introduction of small-scale renewable power production units n ormally require energy storage units in combination with smart grids. In addition, batteries are found in an increasing number of applications related to portable electronic components, as well as for subsea operation. Norwegian research groups have dem onstrated excellence within several fields of materials technology, as well as power electronics. Research and development related to various battery technologies has expanded considerably over the last two years. Several Norwegian companies are in the p rocess of establishing production lines for battery grade materials, and one company has made the decision to establish a battery production line. Furthermore, in view of the increased utilization of batteries for a number of applications, providing knowl edge and facilities for characterization of full scale units is necessary. China has taken a leading role when it comes to industrial manufacture of batteries, and has several strong research groups in the field. The contact between NTNU and SINTEF and the Chinese research institute is a result of strategic efforts from SINTEF/NTNU for establishing collaborations with Chinese research groups. In the field of batteries, GRINM has a strong position within materials development for batteries, whereas SINTE F/NTNU can offer a wide range of characterisation techniques, as well as a production line for testing of lab-scale batteries.
