Resources and peace: Power Sharing and Wealth Sharing in Post-Conflict Situations

Awarded: NOK 0.16 mill.

I have been invited to visit University of California San Diego (UCSD) from January to May 2011 where I intend to mainly work on my PhD which focuses on how economic power as a result of resource wealth is shared in post conflict societies. It seems clea r that natural resources are relevant in conflict onset and duration. It is therefore reasonable to look at the role of natural resources in post-conflict situations. Particularly in countries where the conflict is related to distribution of resources (su ch as oil or land) or where resources have financed the conflict (for example diamonds). In some cases natural resources might also influence and intensify the conflict more indirectly such as the oil pipelines where there are strong political interests. In all of these situations the way natural resources are dealt with in the peace process and in the post-conflict period seem vital to whether the conflict will reignite or a new resource related conflict will break out. While at USCD I have three areas I will work on. My main task will be to work on an article on horizontal inequality and wealth sharing in the Niger Delta, based on survey data that I have collected. Furthermore, I will be working on a course paper on ethics related to the use and collec tion of survey data in conflict areas, and I will be using the survey from Niger Delta as the example. Finally, I will continue working on the papers and articles I were unable to finished before I went on maternety leave as well as ongoing book projects.
