In recent years, the Norwegian salmon aquaculture industry has developed towards using more exposed, high-energy sites to obtain better access to high water quality and to increase production. Exposed sites may lead to improved production due to high wate r quality and rates of exchange and simultaneously reduce ecological effects on the sea floor through better waste dispersion. While beneficial, high currents and high waves, there are also considerable bottlenecks that must be overcome to ensure economic profitability and ecological sustainability. Some of these main bottlenecks are: fish to/from boat transfer, maintenance and operations, surveillance and remote control, farm structural integrity, fish welfare, feed to barge operations, man welfare (H.S. E), and economics. These challenges need to be solved through a global approach; by connecting research across the disciplines of hydrodynamics, structural analysis, cybernetics, economy, human safety, and risk analysis the gathered consortium will enable improvements to farms at exposed locations. Knowledge will be developed through five connected work packages (WPs): WP1: focuses on assessment of operations, management strategies to improve safety, reliability and productivity. WP2: focuses on solution s to ensure the structural integrity of the farm system. WP3: focuses on the study of surveillance requirements and potential for exposed farming. WP4: focuses on the study of solutions to improve the interfaces and interactions between vessels, barge, c age and fish. WP5: focuses on the development of decision support system for operational value chain planning.
