Subject Fields:

I am applying for a grant to visit the Centre for the Study of Mind in Nature (CSMN) at the University of Oslo from the beginning of September 2011 to the end of July 2012. I am currently a PhD student in philosophy based at the Arché research centre at t he University of St Andrews. While at CSMN I will complete work on my PhD thesis, and prepare for publication articles on based on the research I do there. One of CSMN's three current projects is on linguistic agency. This project has been investigating t he relationship between context and communication. My work is informed by the issues being investigated there and I hope my work will contribute to it. CSMN holds regular events for all its projects including workshops and conferences on topics directly r elevant to my work. The linguistic agency project organises seminars which I will participate in and contribute to. In particular it will be useful for me to work with three of the professors attached to the project: Robyn Carston, François Recanati, and Deirdre Wilson, as well as the other faculty and students who are associated with the centre. My project connects with the research done at CSMN in two ways. Firstly, all the projects there rely on an account of content for their completion. They all tou ch on issues of rationality and rational relations are inter alia between contentful states. Secondly, my approach to problems of content is based on the work being doing in the linguistic agency project on communication and context. My visit will therefo re be of benefit to my own research and my presence will contribute to the research being conducted at CSMN.
