Holbergs ideologier

The project "Ideologies of Holberg" will place the authorship of Holberg (1684-1754) within the European Enlightenment through studying his non-fiction, major bulks of which has received scant attention in prior research. Holberg will be examined comparatively in a European context. Through Holberg the project will highlight the historical prerequisites of philosophical modernity in Scandinavia in the first part of the 18th Century (early Enlightenment). The project especially focuses on Holberg's writings on natural law, his national history, his History of the Jews and his History of the Church. All published in Danish. The project has arranged and co-arranged several seminars in Denmark and Norway with international participation. The project results are published partly as independent articles and partly as books. Published books are Sejersted and Olden-Jørgensen (eds) ?Historikeren Ludvig Holberg? (sap 2015), with contributions from several of the involved researchers, and Sebastian Olden-Jørgensen: ?Ludvig Holberg som pragmatisk historiker? (Museum Tusculanum 2015). A main result is the yet unpublished English anthology Ludvig Holberg (1684-1754). Learning and Literature in the Nordic Enlightenment? with project participants Knud Haakonssen and Sebastian Olden-Jørgensen as editors and chapters by researchers involved in the project seminars. A complete manuscript has been submitted to the publisher (Routledge, formerly Ashgate) according to contract. The project had the explicit intention of being a scholarly support to the publishing project ?Writings of Ludvig Holberg?. The project itself financed no Ph.D.-projects, but was meant to offer a context for young researches with Holberg-relevant projects. Several Ph.D.-students have been invited to project seminars, and three who have regularly participated in the project have successfully submitted and defended a Ph.D.-thesis that sites the project: Kristoffer Schmidt (history, University of Copenhagen), Søren Koch (law, University of Bergen) and Thomas Slettebø (history, University of Bergen). Two more Ph.D.-students who are yet to submit their thesis have been closely related to the project. The project has also instigated courses on Holberg at University of Bergen and several master theses on relevant subjects have been written. The scholarly results of the project could be subsumed as follows: - More detailed knowledge of the history works of Holberg, especially pertaining to sources, influences and reception. - Better understanding of Holberg?s role in European 18th Century intellectual context, especially pertaining to natural law and the tradition of eclecticism. It is hoped that through highlighting the authorship of Holberg in a European context, the project will contribute to the international debate on ?Enlightenment? and help emphasize the importance of the historicizing natural law writing in the 18th Century.

Prosjektets mål er å tydeliggjøre Holbergs posisjon i det europeiske 1700-tallets ideologiske landskap. Dette vil man nærme seg gjennom hans sakprosa, det vil si hans ulike historieverk, naturrett og essayistikk. En undersøkelse av disse tekstene er derme d prosjektets konkrete arbeidsoppgave. Herunder vil det være vesentlig å undersøke konkrete og mulige tekstforelegg, så vel som mer indirekte påvirkningskilder. I tillegg til slike komparative perspektiver, er det nødvendig med tematisk analyse av verkene og nærlesing. Det er en underliggende hypotese at moderne 1700-tallsforskning åpner for en bredere forståelse av den ideologiske dynamikken i Europa på begynnelsen av 1700-tallet, og at dette legger til rette for en bedre forståelse av Holbergs forfatter skap. I dette ligger en viss vektlegging av engelsk og nordeuropeisk opplysningstradisjon. Det er også en hypotese at sakprosaen, som utgjør en dominerende del av forfatterskapet, er nøkkelen til å forstå Holbergs posisjon i 1700-tallets opplysningskultur . Det er et grunnpremiss at store deler av Holbergs sakprosa fram til nå er grovt underforsket i både Danmark og Norge, og at dette derfor er et nødvendig prosjekt i nasjonalt kanonperspektiv og i plasseringen av skandinavisk opplysning i en større kontek st. I tillegg til sentrale komparative studier, som i begrenset grad er gjennomført i forhold til Holbergs historieskriving, vil det altså være aktuelt med nærlesing av de tekststrategiene og ideologiske normene som uttrykkes i tekstene. Holbergs ideologi kommer ikke bare fram ved hvilke forfattere han forholder seg til og kommenterer, men også hvordan han behandler de ulike synspunktene retorisk i sin egen tekst. Tematiske studier må supplere den komparative og idehistoriske delen. Sentrale tematikker er : religion, samfunnssyn, kjønns- og familieforståelse, menneskesyn, historiografi og sjangeroppfatning. Prosjektet er Bergens-basert, men representerer et bredt nasjonalt samarbeid og internasjonal spisskompetanse.
