Advanced accelerator physics research for future linear colliders

Awarded: NOK 1.6 mill.

The project suggested concerns research in the field of advanced accelerator physics, focusing on plasma acceleration schemes for future linear colliders for high-energy particle physics. The application candidate, Erik Adli, has 7 years of experience in the field of experimental particle physics; two years experience with detector technology for ATLAS (as CERN Fellow) and five years experience with accelerator physics research for future linear colliders, including Ph.D. work within the international CL IC collaboration and plasma-wake field acceleration work at the FACET facility at SLAC, Stanford, USA. The CLIC work has included defining one Norwegian master thesis and two new Norwegian Ph.D. projects for CLIC, for which the candidate is currently co- supervisor. The proposed research focuses on beam driven plasma wake field acceleration in FACET. FACET will investigate key concepts of plasma wake field acceleration in the coming few years, including positron acceleration and beam emittance preservat ion. The candidate will in particular study beam-plasma instabilities in FACET. The results of the proposed research will have direct implications for the applicability of plasma wakefield acceleration for a linear collider. The proposed research will al so allow the candidate to sustain a continuing linear collider research activity within the CLIC collaboration, including the supervision of Norwegian CLIC Ph.D. students. The secondary objective is to increase the awareness about and competence in the f ield of accelerators in Norway, through supervision and recruitment of students, public outreach as well as networking international accelerator research with the University of Oslo and the Norwegian physics community in general.
