This project aims to develop during the next two years a cooperation with the Middle Atmosphere group at the Free University of Berlin, to better understand the coupling processes between the stratosphere, the mesosphere and the troposphere, during strato spheric sudden warmings.
More specifically,
I) To better understand the relative roles of planetary and gravity waves in forcing the polar stratopause ?jumps? and transport through the stratopause during modeled SSWs.
II) To identify the existence of an inter-hemispheric coupling during modeled SSWs, and its origin.
III) To investigate how blocking highs warm or cool the Arctic stratosphere in the model simulations, depending on their geographical location.
