Network for Phd and Post-doctoral fellows working on anadromous salmonids

Awarded: NOK 99,999

NoWPaS is an international network open for early stage researchers working on wild salmonids. It was initiated in Norway in 2005 in order to enhance dissemination of knowledge regarding Salmo salar and Salmo trutta. From 2005 up to now, NoWPaS has succe eded in organizing free-of-charge annual workshops in Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, England, Scotland and France. The annual workshop in 2012 is to be held again in Norway. Over 220 early-stage researchers have met to promote network building and to d isseminate their research with particular focus on the conservation of the Norwegian wild salmon stocks. Such research will play an important and central role in the advancement of our knowledge of these ecologically and socially important fish species. The NoWPaS network involves three main projects: 1.Dissemination of ongoing research At the annual workshop participants present the results of their research. They have the opportunity to receive feedback on their own work and share developments withi n the field. Invited senior scientists present talks on their work and highlight areas where future research is required. Presented material and following discussions will form a basis for a report that will be published and sent to all participants, memb ers and sponsors of the network. 2.Applied field activities One-day activities take place at the same time as the annual workshop ranging from field excursions to practical training. They provide an opportunity for young researchers to experience hands o n the practical application of current knowledge, to increase skill levels and to promote networking between young and established scientists 3.Members forum and communication Several communication tools are used within NoWPaS to maintain and widen the ne twork: homepage (www.nowpas.eu), members emailing list and Facebook group. They provide the communication platform in NoWPaS before and after the annual meeting and are key for the success of this event.
