Being Visitors - Becoming Producers. The Poetics and Politics of Audience Participation

Awarded: NOK 45,999

Participative strategies have enhanced in such ways that participation itself has become a model for cultural self-understanding. Accordingly, media theorists such as Henry Jenkins have referred to the rising of a 'convergence culture', by this examining the emergence of the cultural context that supports widespread participation in the production and distribution of media. Whereas Jenkins and others are interested in the setting of participation - hereby exclusively focusing on what they call 'media crea tors', i.e. blogger, participants in online communities, metagamer etc. - our workshop will approach a variety of cultural genres where participation plays an ever greater role as both an artistic practice and a critique on institutional power relations: hence on the poetics and politics of audience participation. As the means of including a broader audience become more and more accepted in the fields of museums, the arts and the media, theoretical and methodological approaches remain singular. Our worksh op therefore sets out to analytically frame the on-going processes as the audience is more and more becoming the producers of cultural values.
