Sociology and Social Work: Theory and Practice

Awarded: NOK 99,999

The second conference on Sociology and Social Work will be held in Oslo the 30 and 31 of May 2012. It will discuss theoretical and practical/empirical issues related to the different institutions of the welfare state like labor market, immigration, exclus ion and inclusion. Sociology and social work are two disciplines concerned with social problems, social structure and how individuals respond to and live within cultural and structural constraints. Yet they relate to the welfare state from different angle s: sociology is to some degree perceived by some as a theoretical discipline, distant to the everyday problems of practitioners while social work is perceived as too micro-oriented. The major aim of the conference is to establish a field of research in So ciology and Social Work based in the Norwegian context, as well as an international network in this field. The objectives are as follows: to promote contacts between researchers of both disciplines and different countries, build a network in the field, in volve researchers, professors and PhD candidates of both disciplines and strengthen existing collaborations with the Department of Sociology at the University of Oslo. The scientific challenges are twofold: develop a cross-disciplinary understanding of we lfare policies and welfare professions; enhance knowledge production that is relevant for welfare policies, welfare services, practitioners and service users.
