Awarded: NOK 0.16 mill.

Project Number:

Project Period:

Subject Fields:

The main objective of the project is to compare the structure of work addiction among students in Norway and Poland and to identify, through the cross-cultural comparisons and within particular culture analysis, the socioeconomic factors related to studen ts' workaholic behaviours. In order to achieve this aim a Norwegian adaptation of the questionnaire measuring work addiction among students will be carried out. The results will provide information about the structure of workaholism among Norwegian studen ts, which will then be compared to the structure of work addiction among students in Poland. The early predictors of the work addiction among students in Norway will be preliminarily identified. Further, a measure of the perceived socioeconomic uncertaint y in the population of students in Norway and Poland will be developed. It will allow to identify the socioeconomic factors related to workaholic behaviours among students. A model of work addiction development which takes into account the variables relat ed to the perceived socioeconomic uncertainty will be developed and initially tested. The most critical challenges of the project are the coordination of the research in Norway and Poland, and the application of the methodological solutions allowing for v alid and valuable cross-cultural comparisons. The research findings will provide significant potential for applications. The study will examine the early predictors of work addiction, including socioeconomic factors, and provide tools for identifying prof iles of workaholic behaviours, attitudes, feelings and beliefs among students in Norway and Poland. This will enable work addiction screening tests among students and early interventions, such as training programmes for the students at risk of developing full work addiction syndrome. These programmes should concentrate on modifying the attitudes, beliefs and behaviours leading towards work addiction and its potential detrimental consequences.
