Boksynopsis: The book argues that the terminological change from "antiquities" (eighteenth century) to "historical monuments" (nineteenth and early twentieth centuries) and finally to "heritage (present) is not a random linguistic variat ion, but the result of changing experiences of time and temporality. The book will investigate these changes through a series of case studies on how material remains from the past have been termed and treated. The book is a contribution to the fields of i) heritage studies and ii) cultural memory studies. Its originality lies in its historical perspective: It includes investigations into eighteenth century antiquarianism, and it takes a serious look into the historical transformations expressed by the sh ifting terminology.
